David Maitland Memorial Trial
Event Report
Simon Harris became the third overall winner in three events, beating MSUK Championship leader Trevor Moffatt by a slender margin.
Harris slowly opened up an eighteen point lead in the front wheel drive class over fellow Golf GTi driver Colin Reid, in turn dropping lowest marks on the sections. Meanwhile, Moffatt totally dominated his small new car class to beat the returning Tim Beard by over seventy points.
Fresh from his 75th Birthday in the previous days John Charles took a surprise and maiden class win in the rear wheel drive class, beating multiple champions Barrie Parker and Mark Hoppe. Charles day long battle saw a single point win over Parker, with round one winner Dick Glossop a further two points behind who were fourth and fifth overall.
Reid had a poor final round allowing Garry Preston to finish two points behind, and Rupert North’s points-free final round was only enough for fourth in class and eighth overall ahead of reigning champion Mark Hoppe and Neil Mackay who continues to develop his Ignis in tenth overall.
The clubman section was superbly supported with thirty one entries, won by Barry Redmayne in his Liege.
