Event Report

Yorkshire weekend – Dovey Double

This years Yorkshire weekend was a somewhat wet affair, but nevertheless resulted in a dominant display by Dorset driver Tim Dovey in the all conquering Clio Sport.

Airedale and Pennine under the control of regular winner Rupert North laid on 8 wide, bumpy and challenging hills with a surprising amount of grip in the day long drizzle.

Barrie Parker was on top form but with several no shows and a double retirement the class numbers never give him a fair crack at the overall win on IOP.

and from Trevor Moffatt:

Saturday 22nd July saw the first trial of the Yorkshire weekend hosted by Airedale and Pennine Motor Car Club. The weather forecast did not look good for the whole weekend and it did not disappoint with continual showers throughout the day. Despite the rain the ground held up well and some long and varied sections were set out across the top of the hill. With encouragement to try new ideas to bring new challenges to the event Clerk of the Course ’Rupert North’ set out one hill which was timed. This meant that when the ‘time set’ was up, unless you had already cleaned the hill you dropped marks depending where you where when the clock stopped. It certainly mixed up some of the scores.

Fourteen competitors started the day with an even number of local and national entrances across classes B and D.

Round 1 saw a lot of low scores across both classes. In Class B Tim Dovey Lead the class with a clean round over his son Charlie who dropped 1, followed by Trevor Moffatt a further 1 point behind. Mark Hoppe was several points further behind in a rare appearance nationally in his Suzuki Alto. Class D saw three clear rounds by Barrie parker, John Charles and local man Brian Colman. It also saw a brief appearance by Garry Preston and Paul Myatt who were double driving a Panther Lima.  Unfortunately, after 5 hills it suffered fuel problems forcing both drivers to retire. Another new car to come to the class was a Dellow driven by Ian Nute used with mixed results after failing to get it going on some steep climbs.

Round 2 saw some rain, changes to the hills and a shortening of the time penalty to take marks off drivers with some success. In Class B Tim maintained a slender lead over Charlie with Trevor dropping a bit further behind. In Class D Barrie increased his lead slightly over fellow liege driver John Charles.

After a short lunch break conditions improved and the next two rounds saw Rupert battling away with the hill layouts to stop clear rounds. He had some success but the scores did improve. The lowest score of the day was Barrie only dropping 10 marks, half that of his closest class rival Brian Colman who beat John Charles by a single mark. With such a small class D the indexing didn’t help his overall position having to settle for the class win.

In class B Tim Dovey secured yet another 1st overall with a significant margin over other class competitors. Charlie was 1st in class just a few marks ahead of Trevor who was 2nd. Local delicacies were awarded as prizes at the end of a pleasant day’s trialling as the rain started to get heavier.
