John Wadsworth 1937-2021

Posted on 28th July 2021

The news about John came as a shock as it was only 5 weeks after he had been diagnosed with cancer, indeed only 6 weeks after his last competitive event in his MX5. He was itching to get better as he’d got several entries in for events through the summer, sadly it was not to be.

From his teens John was involved in motor sport, his father Edgar was a serious competitor including at Le Mans. John rallied a variety of cars in the early 60’s and his Liege rally with Mike Wood was always a great story, John is the only driver of a Mini to actually finish a Liege, he was very proud of that.  Throughout the years spent as a family man John harboured a desire to return to motor sport, so with lifelong friend and fellow Lancastrian John Waddington when both were already in their 70’s, they successfully shared a KA in BTRDA and British Car Trials.

At the same time John was competing with his 2 MX5’s in Sprints, Hillclimbs and AutoSolos, often doing 2 events in a weekend from his homebase at Harrogate. In 2017, aged 80,  John competed on 51 events, he was Class 1 MSA British Car Trials Champion, and was 3rd overall in the prestigious BTRDA Allrounders Championship.

An amazing life for such a wonderful character, his friendship, enthusiasm  and stories will be missed by so many, it was a privilege for all of us to have known him.

BTRDA to launch a new Championship for 2021

Posted on 31st December 2020

The BTRDA will be running a Targa Road Rally Championship in 2021 specifically aimed at Clubmen. The Championship will support the continuing development of Newcomers and Young Drivers/Navigators, plus attract those who want to compete in a wider range of other disciplines. The focus of the BTRDA Targa Championship for 2021 is at the smoother, simpler end of the scale, with contenders also likely to use their cars on a variety of disciplines such as AutoSOLOs, Autotests, Trials, Rallycross, Sprints, Hillclimbs, Autocross, etc. and will be a counting discipline for the BTRDA Allrounders Championship.

While Championship events are still being finalised, qualifying events will be spread around the country, enabling a wide geography to be covered. Some areas are not covered due to the current absence of smoother local Targas, but it is hoped that this situation will change and the Championship can expand in the future.

A new Targa Road Rally Section has been added to the website and any enquiries should go to Alan Wakeman – targa@btrda.com .

You will now be aware of the latest statement from MSUK regarding COVID-19 and the suspension of all Motor Sport in the UK until at least 30th June.  Our thoughts go to all of our organising Clubs for the hard work that they have already done in preparation of their events and the uncertainty that they face. Our Championship Committees will be monitoring the situation closely as to the effect on their Championships and will keep you updated as things develop.
