Event Report

Yorkshire weekend – Dovey Double

Torrential rain all night on Saturday did raise doubts if the Ilkley event would survive, but the field stood up well to the small number of competitors.

Barrie started well with 2 clear rounds- he really needed to stay clean all day to give him any chance on index with a class of 4 starters.

Class B was a close run thing initially but after round 2 Tim D was stretching a lead and leaving Charlie, Trevor, Rupert and Mark to battle the minor places.

Trevor had his best day of the year with a 1st in class after Charlie made two costly mistakes.

Nick Pollitt made another appearance in the Fiat 500 and put in some good climbs- but had no competition in the class to push him.

and from Trevor Moffatt:

Heavy rain over night put in doubt the second event of the Yorkshire weekend hosted by Ilkley and District Motor Club. Upon arrival marshals were hard at work resetting hills to allow for the conditions. At the drivers briefing the fear was that we may have to cut the day short if conditions did not improve.

Due to small entry all competitors started round 1 on the first hill. First up was Nick Pollitt in a second outing in his Fiat 500 in Class A. He managed a few good climbs in a standard car making the most of the grass before it was lost to the mud. Class B saw Tim Dovey and Trevor Moffatt on equal marks dropped after the first 8 hills with Mark Hoppe and Rupert North a few marks behind. A few mistakes and a post hit saw Charlie Dovey several marks further back. Class D saw Barrie Parker take an early lead with a clear round with John Charles and Brian Colman sharing second and Ian Nute some distance behind.

Despite the loss of grass and exposure of mud on most of the hill’s conditions did improve slightly for round 2 with most competitors improving their scores. By the lunchtime break Tim Dovey had opened up a lead with a clear second round leaving the rest of the class to challenge for second place. Charlie had a better round dropping only 1 mark to close the gap on Trevor. Barrie had a second clear round opening up a substantial lead over the rest of the class.

During lunch the hills had been significantly altered. The ground was holding up so well it allowed the clerk of the course to set out some more challenging hills and hold a 4th round that was in doubt at the beginning of the day.

Tim continued as he has done for most of the year to lead class B with two more low scoring rounds. Charlie had a better round 3 than Trevor moving him to second only to make further mistakes in the final round to drop him further down the class behind Rupert North. Barrie wasn’t able to keep his clean sheet dropping marks on both rounds but was still well clear in the class

With such a small class D Barrie again lost out on the index despite having the lowest score of the day having to settle for 1st in class D. 1St overall was awarded to Tim Dovey giving him a Yorkshire weekend double. 1st in class A was Nick Pollitt. 1st in class B was Trevor Moffatt with Rupert North being awarded 2nd in class.
