Mercian Trial

Event Report

Roland Uglow takes win number six which secures his first MSA British sporting trials championship after numerous years as the bridesmaid, with five rounds remaining.

Club: Coventry & Warwickshire Motor Club
Location: Long Compton, Oxfordshire
Championships: MSA, B TRDA Sporting Trials
Starters: 23

Roland Uglow secured his first British sporting trials championship with his sixth win of the season ably assisted by Laura Wilks at the Mercian Trial. Uglow had a daylong battle with reigning champion John Fack and Ian Wright. Initially Uglow and Wright led after six hills, but Fack took the lead at lunch by three points. Conditions were drying on the long hills, but shortly after lunch a shower of rain made the ground exceptionally slippery again and scores rose. Fack extended his lead, but a careless five on the last round hitting a marker post enabled Uglow to climb infront with two phenomenal climbs on the same section. Wright struggled on hill six all day dropping nearly half his points and finished third overall on a rare appearance.

Richard Sharp stared with his best ever result in fourth overall and won the intermediate class from fellow northern competitor Barry Hogg who completed the top fifteen overall. Peter Fensom had a quiet day in fifth not making any mistakes. Ian Veale dropped a costly eleven to slip back to sixth overall, just ahead of Andrew Woodhead who ventured to Long Compton for the first time and was testing fuel injection. Roger Bricknell finished ninth and was best live axle. Meanwhile fellow Cornishman Colin Flashman drove superbly to finish in eleventh overall and top novice competitor from arch rival and good friend Alan Murton.
