Simon Kingsley took the lead of the Loughborough sporting trial on Sunday during the first round to dropping just seven points, a point ahead of fellow northerner Mark Milne and Peter Fensom. Neither of the British championship contenders, Ian Bell and John Fack excelled both dropping a big six points on hill seven as conditions deteriorated rapidly.

During the second round however Ian Bell’s horsepower advantage began to show with a couple of big blasts gaining a few marks to take the lead of the trial at lunch by a single point from Fensom. John Fack had changed his engine camshaft during Friday, despite leading the championship beforehand, looking for some more top end power and the third best round saw him climb to fifth ten points behind Bell. A costly cross camber trickle going wrong dropped Kingsley back to fourth on hill five.

With the British championship in his hands Bell climbed his first four hills, then drove out of a section at a three on hill five, but his last three hills were on a big grass bank that saw the grass rapidly disappearing and trickling becoming harder. Long standing passenger Russell Sharp was working overtime directing Bell on the hills however insufficient momentum on his last hill saw a five dropped which the next competitor climbed and second place overall. Meanwhile Fack had relaxed with nothing to loose over, but his last hill hill five with its tricky cross camber deteriorating further instigated some magical trickling and the first clean of the hill which saw Fack climb to third place overall when it mattered and the British championship for the first time in six years. Fensom’s tidy round saw him take the overall win, and become the seventh winner of the year. Mark Milne finished in fourth a point behind Fack despite two big scores during the last round. Roger Bricknell’s showed moments of his old brilliance to finish in seventh and top live axle, with Bryan Walker winning the intermediate class from Richard Robarts. Richard Sharp once again won the novice class from David Hailes.
