Championship Final 2008

Event Report

Ian Wright totally dominated the Final in the snow and ice at Gale Hall.

Ian Wright dominated the BTRDA Gold Star final near Penrith on Saturday, ending up a clear winner in very challenging icy and snowy conditions. Stuart Beare also made the long trip from Kent to win the Silver Star for the second time in three years.

With four inches of snow falling on the Tuesday prior, which just melted sufficiently at the 1200ft high site in Melmerby, Penrith enabled the most historic BTRDA Championship to be concluded, but still meant sub-zero conditions all day before the wind chill factor.

Monty Peters lead after the first round, but it was Wright's superb understanding of the changing conditions, which enabled him to secure the initiative on the second round which he consolidated for the rest of the day. This was his second Gold Star, ten years after the other, also on the anniversary of the debut of his Sherpa Indy, which ended the six year run of Crosslé wins. Wright proved to be in a world of his own with son Kiel passengering, not making any mistakes all day.

Cornwall's Thomas Bricknell, in his second season finished second using all his subtle trickling skills, despite failing to turn the fuel on on the first hill costing six, which thankfully didn't prove costly. Fellow Cornish Roland Uglow continued his superb run of late to complete the podium in third, despite a poor first round.

British championship runner-up Duncan Stephens could only manage fourth despite breaking a driveshaft at the mid-point, which was changed in less than fifteen minutes on the hillside. Meanwhile, reigning British and BTRDA champion John Fack was in fifth, and Northern Ireland Champion Brian Edgar in sixth. Simon Kingsley, the Cumbrian champion, finished ninth and top northern competitor. Mutliple past champion Calvin Kneebone, who has returned to the sport in the last year, finished a creditable tenth in the gold star and top live axle car in the bitter conditions.

Jerome Fack initially lead the Silver Star but a few car problems meant that he slipped back to third at the end. Stuart Beare improved on the second round to take the lead which he then held to the finish to take the win, with his wife Katharine passengering, who was pregnant when he won two years ago. Nick Speed surprised many with a good last round to snatch second in the silver star in only his second event in a Crosslé. Last years Silver Star champion Mark Milne could only manage sixth.
