Loughborough Autotest

Event Report

A cold, windy day greeted the 24 competitors at Donington Park for the Loughborough Autotest, the final round of the Demon Tweeks BTRDA Autotest Championship. Richard Pinkney had virtually sealed the championship, but three other competitors were in a position to win as they faced 6 runs at the three tests laid out in the car park behind Redgate corner. Malcolm Livingston (Lindsay Special 1600) took an immediate lead after the first round, 2 seconds ahead of Dave Mosey (Mini 1430), who was just 1 second ahead of both Richard Pinkney (Caterham 7 1600), and Chris Chapman (Striker 1800). Livingston consolidated his lead during the second round, holding a clear 5 second lead over Chapman. Pinkney and Dave Fox (Mini 1600) were a further 2 seconds adrift, whilst Mosey had a 5 second penalty on test 6.

The lunchtime scoreboard, after nine tests, showed Livingston having a 9 second lead over Pinkney, with Chapman, collecting a 5 second penalty on test 9, now 5 seconds further behind. Mosey collected another 5 second penalty, but still regained his lead over Fox by 2 seconds and maintained his 4th place. The saloon car class was in the full control of Warren Gillespie (Nova 1600), who was 24 seconds ahead of Murray Walker (Nova 1600), who in turn was 13 seconds ahead of Mark Thornton’s similar car.

The nine afternoon tests began with Pinkney collecting a 5 second penalty, but Livingston, Mosey, Fox, and Chapman all charged ahead. A rain affected 5th round slowed the sports cars and specials, and the Minis of Mosey and Fox were quickest by 3 seconds, but Livingston still held a clear lead going into the final round. Fox blinked first, and collected a 5 second penalty on test 17, whilst Pinkney and Chapman showed a little caution, allowing John Moffatt (Westfield Seven 1600) to record the fastest sports car times. However, Livingston was showing remarkable speed and consistency, and set the fastest times over the last 3 tests to win the event by 15 seconds from Mosey. Pinkney and Chapman were a further 7 seconds down, with Fox rounding off the top five.
