Hagley & District Light Car Club – Jon MacKenzie Autotests
Event Report
Results from the first round of the BTRDA Autotest Championship.
A snow covering on the surrounding fields, and a bitterly cold wind welcomed competitors to the first round of the championship at Curborough Sprint Course on Sunday. With 6 former champions on the entry list the competition was going to be a lot hotter than the weather, and it spelt disaster for Alastair Moffatt (Mini Special) as he collected a maximum score on the first test! Paul Swift (Mini Special) also collected a penalty on the first test, but the remaining leading competitors kept a clean sheet to the end of the first round of four tests. The score sheet showed Malcolm Livingston (Lindsay Special) holding a 6 second lead over Dave Mosey (Mini Special) who in turn was a further 2 seconds ahead of Swift. The leading sports cars were Chris Chapman (Striker) and Richard Pinkney (Caterham 7), who were another 8 seconds behind.
The second round saw the leaders all increase their speed, but none of them collected any penalties, whilst both Chapman and Pinkney collected a couple of penalties each, and at lunchtime Livingston had increased his lead to 17 seconds over Mosey, with Swift still a further 4 seconds behind. Pinkney had taken the lead of the sports car class, by just 2 tenths of a second from Chapman, whilst Warren Gillespie (Nova) commanded the saloon car class by 58 seconds, and Dave Fox (Mini) held a 37 second lead over Ash Slights’ similar car, despite breaking a drive shaft on test 5.
Just one round was run in the afternoon, and Livingston collected a single penalty without losing his place, but Swift was also penalised, resulting in a loss of two places overall! Chapman also collected a penalty on his tenth test, but Pinkney collected a maximum score on the same test and almost lost his place to Willie Keaning (Striker). Gillespie and Fox confirmed their class wins with increased margins, whilst Alastair Moffatt was left to rue his maximum score on the first test, without which he would have won! Livingston kept his outright win, continuing on from where he left off last year.
