John Southern

Event Report

Simon Kingsley drove nearly faultlessly at the John Southern trial in Cumbria on Sunday to take a comfortable win, just one point off the optimum, with son Matthew passengering. Kingsley led all day in fairly dry conditions, taking his second win of the year in the BTRDA championship. Behind saw a six way battle with second to eighth covered by a handful of points at lunch but come the end of the third round Bryan Walker secured runner up place just ahead of Barry Hogg and Andrew Woodhead who scored his best result of the year at national level. Julian Fack had frantically been trying to remove his Crossle spark plugs all week and ended up fifth. Martin Grimwood and Boyd Webster close behind in similar Crossle's. Mike Salton was left frustrated following a costly eleven on the second round that dropped him to eighth, but best live axle and novice class winner. Fellow Concord mounted Mark Campbell returned to the sport after five years to finish two points behind Salton with NPTCC Two Day winner Brian Thornton completing the top ten. Bill Rhodes was top clubman in a strong club section entry of eleven supporting the national field.
