Gold, Silver & Bronze Star Final

Event Report

Ian Veale majestically drives to first Gold Star

Ian Veale won the BTRDA Gold Star sporting trials championship on Saturday at Kington, Herefordshire with a majestic drive. Veale has chased the title for over thirty years after being gifted a new trials car as a wedding present from wife Lindsay, and took the championship with middle son Sandy passengering, after elder son Josh won a year ago.

With the exceptionally wet conditions nationwide many expected flat out blasting all day in top gear, but extremely challenging wide hills laid out by Ian Wright required much more skill than that with subtle trickling and blasting which Veale showed all how to do from the offset dropping just a point during the first round of ten hills to lead John Fack by a point. Despite clipping a nine post on the second round he retained the lead at lunch by three points from Simon Gracey, who had been invited from Northern Ireland as their reigning champion which also saw the event halted momentarily as the local hunt passed through the venue.

A sharp shower during the afternoon saw conditions detoriate rapidly, more all out blasting and scores rise but Veale continued his march to be a well deserved popular champion, from John Fack by a clear margin of twelve points. Reigning British champion Roland Uglow, had been favourite following a stunning season, completed the podium ahead of Gracey who had a poor final round dropping to fourth. Pete Fensom won best Mildlander in fifth, Mark Milne Northerner in sixth in a very close gaggle of drivers completing the top ten with Julian Fack, Andrew McKinney, Josh Veale and Simon Kingsley, with McKinnery being top live axle car.

The Silver Star was equally hotly contested with Jerome Fack taking the initial lead from Autotest champion Alastair Moffatt by a point, which was extended to seven at the end of thirty long hills despite Fack struggling with a worsening engine all day finishing thirteenth overall in an entry of thirty five. Moffatt had finished runner up in the Silver Star two years previously at the same site, with Harry Barr third.
