Richard Pinkney started the 2017 championship where he left off in 2016, winning the first round at Curborough Sprint Course on Sunday. His Caterham 7 finished just 7 seconds in front of Malcolm Livingston’s Lindsay Special after 16 tests spread around the circuit. Livingston was leading after the first four tests, Pinkney having collected 10 seconds penalties, with Dave Evans (Blitz Special) and Paul Fobister (Haigh Special) in close attendance.
The lunchtime scoreboard, after 8 tests, showed that Pinkney had gained a 2 second lead over Livingston, with Evans a further 10 seconds behind, and a hard charging Chris Chapman (Striker 1800) just 4 seconds back having collected 10 seconds penalties.
The 8 afternoon tests saw Evans fall back behind Chapman, who continued to charge on, putting pressure on to Livingston, who collected a 5 second penalty on each of the last 2 rounds. Pinkney remained penalty free during the afternoon to start his 2017 challenge for the championship in fine style, with Livingston, Chapman, and Evans all holding position to the finish.
