Gold / Silver Star championship final
Added: 21st March 2012
The sixty fourth BTRDA Expert Gold and Silver Star sporting trials championship final will be held near Petersfield, Hampshire on Saturday 24th March.
Over forty of the best trials drivers from England and Northern Ireland are vying for the famous Gold and Silver trophies, and is the most open for years with all the top drivers in developed and comparable cars with more than ten likely winners.
The last eighteen months has seen Ian Bell's comeback to the sport clinching the British title, which he won three times in the mid 1990's, with eight trial wins including three this year already, however Bell has never won the BTRDA Gold Star Final despite winning four MSA British championships. Ian Wright is the reigning champion, having won overall last January in Northern Ireland, could become the most successful driver in history with a fifth victory if he retains the trophy.
Thomas Bricknell won five qualifying rounds, when work commitments allowed travelling out of Cornwall, and is sure to challenge strongly with tremendous finesse in his driving having only competed once before in the final where he finished second overall. Roland Uglow is always consistent and won the last event at Shelsley Walsh. Ian Bell's son Andrew has a new car that he is already winning with, however a roll at the last trial is expected to dent his confidence although received a swift rebuild in Northern Ireland in a week.
Brian Edgar travels from Northern Ireland, having won the title twice previously and is always a keen supporter of the event and potential winner, along with four other competitors from Northern Ireland, along with Andrew McKinney who has won the Silver star the last two years but is now in the Gold Star. The event see's six previous Gold Star winner's and six previous Silver Star winner's all competing, and fifteen event winners all partaking.
The Silver Star category is for less experienced drivers and will see 1995 winner Boyd Webster competing though is likely to see a new winner. Pat Henson should have won two years ago, but for running out of fuel on the last hill so could challenge in expected very different conditions.
